Local Soroptimists Creating a Mountain of a Million Daffodils!

daffodil-flowers

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay;

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Outdid the sparkling waves in glee:

A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed–and gazed–but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie,

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

——–William Woodsworth, 1770-1850

Each year colorful yellow daffodils blanket the mountain communities in glorious color when they pop up out of the soil and grace the landscape with bright yellow flowers. Many years ago (at least 20, I believe) the members of Soroptimist International of the Rim of the World Communities began selling large King Alfred daffodil bulbs and all these years later the program to create a mountain of a million daffodils is a huge success. Throughout the years more and more mass plantings of the bulbs are buried in the ground waiting for spring and warmer weather and when they bloom it is absolutely beautiful.

Nothing says spring in the mountains like a field of these bright flowers and Soroptimist International of the Mountain Communities still has available bulbs. These bulbs are  first-class (so to speak) and they are perfect for the mountain climate.

The sale of the bulbs has been a huge fundraiser for the local Soroptimist chapter and you’re in luck because the members still have bulbs available. You can purchase a case of 200 bulbs for only $120, a half case of 100 bulbs is $70, a quarter case of 50 bulbs is $40 and an eighth of a case or 25 bulbs is only $25. The price includes sales tax. If you’re going to purchase daffodil bulbs this year buy them from the local women that raise money to support so many mountain events as well as scholarships and make mountain living  so much more enjoyable. Members of this international women’s organization are business owners and the local Rim chapter is filled with your neighbors and local business women.

These magnificent hardy bulbs are sure to brighten your life and the life of your neighbors and visitors who pass your home in the spring. The bulbs sell out fast so its important to order as many as you like before they’re no longer available. For information call Laurie at (909) 867-3141 or send an e-mail to Yolanda at keithied@aol.com.

Imagine how beautiful your front or back yard (or both) would look in the spring with a bright yellow blanket of color. It really is magnificent and their colorful bright yellow flowers are always a sign that spring really is right around the corner if it’s not already there.
