At approximately 4:15 p.m. on August 9 officers from the California Highway Patrol, Arrowhead Area office were summoned to a fatal accident on Hwy. 18 in Running Springs. According to information from the California Highway Patrol the accident was reported to the CHP office at 4:50 p.m.
The information on this accident was gathered by CHP Officer M. Caldwell of the local Arrowhead Area CHP office in Running Springs.
According to the information, a 63-year-old motorcyclist from Irvine, California was traveling east on Hwy. 18, west of Allview Drive on a 2002 Honda Goldwing motorcycle. Oscar Garcia, 20-years-old of Montclair, California, was driving a 2006 Freightliner truck south on Allview Drive at the intersection of State Route 18 in Running Springs.
According to the CHP report, Garcia failed to stop at the stop sign and he continued south into the intersection. As the motorcyclist was traveling east on Hwy. 18 he attempted to take evasive actions to avoid a collision but he was unable to stop his motorcycle and he struck the right side of the Freightliner. The victim was ejected from his motorcycle and was subsequently run over by the rear wheels of the large truck. The victim, whose name, as of this afternoon was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Oscar Garcia, 20-years-old, was placed under arrest for vehicular manslaughter.
