Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow this year!
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow this year!

It’s no “trick or treat” but Snow Valley Mountain Resort will be hosting its annual Job Fairs on Saturday October 31 and Saturday, November 7. There are a wide variety of positions open and this annual event is the chance for potential employees to meet and interview with the various department managers. The hours for the job fairs are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To save time interested employees can download and complete an application by logging onto: http://www.snow-valley.com/jobs. The application can be taken directly to this annual winter job fair.

Snow Valley employees enjoy ski and/or snowboard privileges and they also receive discounts on many Snow Valley products. Did you know that Snow Valley  hosts a monthly employee mixer to help the staff get to know each other better? What a great idea!

Another great benefit that employees get is that their family members and/or dependents may receive discounted ski or snowboard or snow play privileges. Dependents may receive discounts on ski or snowboard

Between ski patrol, ticket sellers, office help, food services, ski rentals, ski patrol and many other jobs Snow Valley is a huge winter employer and throughout its long history the management “draws” a large amount of “locals” to fill as many positions as possible.

For more information about the Snow Valley Job Fair call (909) 867-27511 or log onto: http://www.snow-valley.com.

This ski area has a long history  and throughout the decades they keep right on going. Many employees return year after year to work at this local ski area that has such a long history in the San Bernardino Mountains.

See you on the slopes! You might start praying for snow….it never hurts to get a head start on Mother Nature!

St. Richard’s Episcopal Church Hosting Annual Yard Sale Sept. 5 and 6

rummage.sale.02It’s that time again……..time when the parking lot of St. Richard’s Episcopal  Church in Skyforest is filled to almost overflowing when they host their annual yard sale. This year’s big event will be held Saturday, September 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday September 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The address is 28708 Hwy. 18 and for you “oldies but goodies” you’ll remember that the church is located directly across Hwy. 18 from what was (way back then) known as the Storybook Inn.

This event is always fun and it’s a great way to “stock” a cabin that’s not occupied at all times or to find goodies for lucky residents who live in the mountains full-time.

One of the things that makes this yard sale so much fun is that there’s just about anything that anyone would want or need.

Come on over to Hwy. 18 in Skyforest and don’t forget your wallet. You’re apt to find a lot of great goodies that you can’t resist. This event is always fun and it is a great way for part time cabin owners to pick up some great things to put in their rental cabins. Come to think of it, it’s a great way to pick up great goodies for your family or friends. Come and enjoy this big rummage sale. It’s always fun, to say the least!

CHP Holding Annual Car Seat Program in Big Bear Lake August 29

"The Line Up"-Five or six of the California Highway Patrol squad cars were lined up along the embankment on the side of the Hwy. 18 station so the parking lot was free to house a small car show and bounce house for the children.

Each year the California Highway Patrol  holds a special event to help parents who can’t afford car seats for the children and this year, August 29, will be no exception. The hours will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year’s event, “Child Safety Seat”  giveaway will be held at the Big Bear Convention Center at 42900  Big Bear Drive in Big Bear Lake.

Several “fitting stations” for children who need car seats will be held. Nationally certified child passenger safety seat technicians will make sure that the seats the children will receive are appropriate for their size. The technicians can also help if a car seat the child uses has been recalled  or is now defective. Several “fitting stations” will be available throughout this important safety event.

These programs, through the California Highway Patrol, truly can save a child’s life if (a) the family isn’t using a car seat or (two) the current car seat is defective or no longer usable by the child.

Parents who meet certain requirement may receive a “grant funded seat” for their child. As part of this safety event if you are the parent of a small child and want help to know how to use the current car seat you have or want help dealing with a different car seat issue be sure to attend. There will be plenty of CHP officers available to talk with parents who have questions.

The CHP reminds parents that when their child (or children) are under eight years of all but are not properly installed in a car seat it can lead to disaster if an accident occurs. While no one can predict when and where an accident will occur it has been proven that child car seats save many, many lives throughout the year. If parents do not have a car seat for their child and the CHP stops them the lack of having one can result in a ticket or they can also get “one point” on their driver’s record.

I Need Your Help…..

Okay all you great people out there in cyber-land. I am trying to reach former Olympian swimmer Klete Keller. I knew him when I had my newspaper here in Running Springs but have lost contact with him. He also has sister Kalyn and Kelsey and i’d love to hear from any of them. They were the grandchildren of Lloyd and Joan Soutar who had Lloyd’s restaurant in Running Springs. All of these family members went on to various Olympics and when I had my local newspaper I had the privilege of interviewing all of them. I understand Klete is quite a successful businessman but I kind of lost track of him several years ago.

Anybody know how to reach any of them?

Thanks, Joan Moseley

Arrowhead Arts Fundraiser Huge Success!

Enjoying a cool evening as well as supporting the Arrowhead Arts programs. What a lovely event, lakeside.
Enjoying a cool evening as well as supporting the Arrowhead Arts programs. What a lovely event, lakeside.

The magnificent home owned by Ken and Nancy Camarella served as the venue for the successful annual, delightful fundraiser for the Arrowhead Arts Association on Saturday, August 3.

Nestled on a cliff the spectacular view of boats skipping across Lake Arrowhead and the beauty of the sunset proved that this lovely home was the perfect venue for the association’s annual fundraiser.  A small classical concert was a lovely part of this special evening and it served as a “hint” of what the upcoming annual concert on August 20 will be when the symphony plays at their annual fall concert.

Maestro Flynn, conductor of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra had a wonderful time at this AAA fundraiser. It was an honor to meet him and have the chance to talk with him.

.

This exquisite, exciting event was a beautiful experience and it was the perfect venue for this exciting evening. Needless to say the food was delicious, Mother Nature graced everyone with a beautiful clear cool evening. The scene below the home, with boats skipping quickly by on the lake was a delightful addition to the ambiance of this special event. Adding to this delightful recipe for a perfect outdoor evening  by the lake, Mother Nature made sure there was a wind that kept everyone cool.

The feature of this fundraising evening was a private concert thanks to the conductor of the San Bernardino Symphony, Maestro Frank Fetta  and Russian cellist RusLan Biryukov who astounded everyone with his incredible talent while playing selections by both Bach and Handel. I was fascinated by watching the bow in his hand fly across the strings of the cello; sometimes with a delicate touch and others with great strength and speed.

Dancing with the beautiful lake below....heaven!
Dancing with the beautiful lake below….heaven!

I have been privileged to attend many AAA concerts throughout the years but this one, in the beautiful surrounding of this home, the garden and the lake below, was not only lovely it was extraordinary setting, especially as the sun went down. This talented Russian cellist almost seemed humbled to be there but in truth, I feel that many of us were humbled by the event that allowed all of us to be in the presence of the maestro and this young, quite unbelievably talented musician. The venue was magnificent at this home, with shady green grass and trees and a view of the blue, blue lake far below. You want a little bit of heaven? If you weren’t there for this big fundraiser you might want to be there next year. It truly is an exceptional event with a wonderful outcome….it’s the Rim of the World communities who benefit from this organization’s generosity. Every year the Arrowhead Arts has helped over 100 local music students, in some way by providing lessons or by providing financial help so an instrument can be rented.

A good musician seeks puts his heart and soul into the instrument he loves and it is always interesting to watch how they hold that instrument. Many people sat on the indoor stairway leading to the upper level of the beautiful home while others sat on couches and everyone was enthralled by the talent and performance that was blossoming in the lovely garden of this spacious, magnificent settling. I was enthralled watching this incredibly talented cellist as his bow just wept across the strings….sometimes with the most delicate touch and others when his fingers just flew across the strings. In some ways he had the light touch of a talented surgeon and, it seemed, at other times he had the strength of a lion. It was, to put it mildly, incredible to watch.

If you have never been to a concert that is sponsored by the Arrowhead Arts Association you do not know what you’re missing. The annual Fall Classical concert will be held Sunday, September 20 at 3 p.m. at the beautiful Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Crest Park (aka Lake Arrowhead). This annual concert is a-maz-ing not only for the exquisite setting but for the acoustics and talent of the members of the  San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra. The featured musician will be Russian cellist Rus Lam Biryukov. He is extraordinary, as we all found out at the delightful recent fundraiser.

AH Arts fundraiser (2)Many, many years ago I still remember attending the very first concert at this venue that was, of course, paid for and organized by a group of music lovers who ultimately became the Arrowhead Arts Association. To this day, I still remember the awe of having a symphony orchestra in “our” mountains and the exquisite church and church garden behind the altar never ceases to astound me with its beauty and calm presence. Come and attend this special annual performance in this magnificent, soaring church.  Whatever your religious belief is (or isn’t) this is a special concert enjoyed by everyone and the beautiful tranquil garden through the enormous windows only adds to the magnificence of this event.

See you on September 20 at the magnificent church, Our Lady of the Lake, in Crest Park. It is located at 27627 Rim of the World Drive (off Hwy. 18). For ticket information log or to purchase tickets call (909) 337-0284. Tickets for this exciting fall program are $25 for adults or $40 for preferred seating. Students Kindergarten through 12th grade are admitted free with an adult.

Annual Arrowhead Arts Concert at Our Lady of the Lake Church Sept. 20

The view from the pews at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church is truly magnificent, as you can see.
The view from the pews at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church is truly magnificent, as you can see.

The last of this year’s Arrowhead Arts Association-sponsored concerts will be held at the beautiful Our Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Arrowhead at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 20.

This annual “end of the summer” event will feature the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra and having been to many of these events through the years if you love classical music you will be in heaven. This year’s concert will include Edward Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnol which will feature the talented violinist Will Hagen. The event will also feature De Ceballos’ Suite de Lara that will spotlight tenor Gustavo Hernandez Garcia. Come and enjoy and rest your spirit and your heart. You will love this concert and, after all, it is really right in your back yard, so to speak.

Cello carrying cases were lined up along the window, almost resembling a person's body, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church during the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra's performance last year.
Cello carrying cases were lined up along the window, almost resembling a person’s body, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church during the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra’s performance last year.

Each year when this event takes place the pews are filled at this magnificent church so if you plan to attend get there early. Parking is always a “tad” difficult if you arrive late or just before the performance so plan ahead and be there early. You can always sit and unwind in the church’s beautiful, calming garden that borders the church.

Every year this thrilling concert also features members of the All Mountain Strings Ensemble (which is funded by the Arrowhead Arts Association). Under the direction of Sharon Rizzo and Linda Wilson this special concert will feature members of the local mountains strings ensemble which, through hours and hours of practice, has truly become a remarkable group of talented musicians. Each time I see them perform at an event I am always amazed at the level of their musical skills. If you closed your eyes and just listened to the music you would never guess that the musicians are students, not paid musical professionals. Come! Enjoy! Close your eyes and let yourself simply listen. These students, and the organization that supports them, are truly remarkable!

The magnificent church is a perfect venue for the symphony orchestra as the musicians are nestled around the front of the church altar. It is a breathtaking site with its soaring cross, the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows and the beautiful, tranquil trees and flowers outside. If your spirit needs a revival be sure to attend this free concert and for about 90 minutes let the music and the site carry off your concerns. You will leave this event feeling blessed and grateful. Trust me, you will be enthralled!

Tickets for this special event are $25 for general admission and $40 for the preferred seating section. Because one of the major projects that this longtime mountain organization has endorsed and continues to endorse is that students who are accompanied by a parent are free. This “gift” to children and their parents is another gift, so to speak, because as part of this organization’s outreach they encourage children to attend the event with the hope that it will foster in them a true appreciation and love of the musical arts.

Tickets are available at the Lake Arrowhead Chamber of Commerce office w in Blue Jay Village. For telephone reservations call (909) 337-0284.

Fabulously Successful Green Valley Lake Aquathon Today!

This morning's Green Valley Lake Aquathon was a fabulous success. Between the swim and the run it was a great day in Green Valley Lake. This is the first event of this type in the local mountain community and from my perspective....it was a hit!
This morning’s Green Valley Lake Aquathon was a fabulous success. Between the swim and the run it was a great day in Green Valley Lake. This is the first event of this type in the local mountain community and from my perspective….it was a hit!

Congratulations to Steve Vasquez and all the people who were responsible for this morning’s fabulous Green Valley Lake Aquathon. While I don’t have the number of participants yet it seemed to me to be a lot….and it was!

I spoke with several people who participated and they’re hoping that this becomes an annual event. In addition to the “fun in the lake” many local shops participated in some way and the always-popular Green Valley Lake garden was filled with people enjoying the beauty and fun of this established garden that is right on Green Valley Lake Road. Several people held court in folding chairs and they had a great view of the Aquathon that was going on literally feet from their vantage point.

Definitely "something to write home about." This jubilant mom with her daughter was, as you can see, all smiles. Proud? You bet'ya!

Hopefully this can become an annual event in Green Valley. Like all big events it takes months of planning and I’m sure this fabulous event was not the exception. A big “pat on the back” to everyone involved, especially Steve Vasquez and his team!

Beautiful tranquil Green Valley Lake comes alive with great summer events. For the first time an aquathon was held in this small San Bernardino Mountains community. It was a huge success!

Okay, so who's having more fun....mom or the kids? I think it's a toss-up. The little ones were proud of their mama and they were having the time of their life!
